A terrarium is a living ecosystem contained within glass, where moisture is naturally recycled through evaporation, condensation, and absorption. With the right conditions and only minimal care, it remains balanced, allowing the plants inside to thrive over time.
Core Maintenance
Designed to remain largely self-sustaining, each ecosystem requires only occasional care. Maintaining the right balance of light, moisture, and airflow allows both open and closed biomes to flourish for years.
Keep your terrarium in bright, indirect natural light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can quickly heat the glass and damage the plants. Closed Biomes: Keep away from windows with prolonged direct sun. Open Biomes: Bright, indirect light with gentle natural airflow.
Mist gently and let the terrarium regulate its moisture naturally. Closed Biomes: Mist about once a week, or when condensation is no longer visible. Open Biomes: Mist every 2–3 days to keep the moss and plants hydrated.
Good airflow helps maintain a healthy balance of moisture. Closed Biomes: If heavy condensation remains for more than 24 hours, open the lid for 2–3 hours. Open Biomes: No manual ventilation is needed. Normal room airflow is sufficient.
Substrate Stratification
Every Sylva Auris terrarium is built upon a carefully layered substrate system. Each layer performs a specific role—from drainage and filtration to root support—working together to create a stable environment for long-term plant health.
Moss & slow-growing plants
The living top layer that adds greenery while helping maintain moisture and shape the landscape.
Coco chips, peat moss, perlite & terracotta
A balanced growing medium that supports healthy roots while retaining moisture and allowing airflow.
Activated charcoal
Helps keep the environment clean by filtering excess moisture and reducing unwanted odors.
Gravel & pebbles
Collects excess water beneath the soil, helping prevent waterlogging and protecting the roots.
Things to Avoid
A few simple precautions will help your Terrarium remain healthy, balanced and beautiful for years to come.
Too much water can cause root rot, mold, and excess condensation. Let the terrarium regulate its moisture naturally.
Direct sunlight can quickly heat the glass and damage the plants. Bright, indirect light is best.
Opening too often can disturb the terrarium's natural moisture balance. Open only when ventilation is needed.
The growing medium is already balanced for the plants. Additional fertilizer can encourage excessive growth and disturb the ecosystem.
Strong heat or dry airflow can stress the plants and disrupt their moisture balance.
